I'm very busy as I'm back to school now (the students return Wednesday) and gearing up for the new year. I'm a big-time workaholic when it comes to teaching, and Andrew is busy working on a brand new face for this here dot com, so things are happening fast.
A bit of AWESOME news did come my way this week. Wednesday was a banner day for me. First of all, I was back to work at BHS and feeling very happy and at home. I remembered pretty much everyone (certainly all the English teachers) and vice versa, and all were ultra-happy reunions. I felt fantastic being back there - so comfortable and excited. I'm thrilled to be back teaching English and feel like my summer preparations are putting me on a very good footing for the year. I still have plenty of work to do, but got a good foundation built during the summer.
Aside from being just plain glad to be back, Wednesday was good because (drum roll, please), I GOT MY OWN ROOM!! I know this sounds strange to non-teachers, many of whom assume that ALL teachers have their own rooms. Not so, dear reader! New public high school teachers in my neck of the woods almost never get their own rooms. We're floaters for at least a year before we get to nest. But, through what I can only assume is the grace of God, I have gotten my own place at BHS. Not only that, but (by switching with a colleague), I have the exact room I wanted! It's the only English room with science tables instead of regular student desks. It's also the former computer lab, so there are tons of machines (very unusual for our school), albeit not very nice ones. Still, I can rearrange the room to my liking.
Now, I do share the room, but I'm there more than anyone else and I get to do the decorating, so it's still my space. It might sound fairly trivial, but it's a HUGE pain to have to traipse myself and my equipment through the hallways between class, dodging students all the way, and get to another classroom (which, no matter how welcoming the "host," is never "mine") and then have to get myself mentally and logistically set up for another class. UG! It's just hard! So yay for my own space! I have one class - the last one of the day, which is an elective - in another room, but that's an easy one to relocate for and it's only a one-quarter class.
Okay, I have got to get myself organized and ready for another early start tomorrow.
Sorry I'm behind on email, snail mail, and just about everything else. I'm so busy with getting ready for the school year (and still working at Huntington Learning Center part time) that it's going to take a few weeks to get into a groove.
Prayers and well-wishes are gladly accepted.
And keep your eyes on this spot for an all new mrshughey.com, coming soon!
