teaching for dummies

This week I spent my days in school district staff development training. Each day I spent most of the day hearing about a class I may teach next year, doing some practice activities, and having facilitators answer various questions about the class and activities. On Monday and Tuesday, I trained for Critical Thinking. I've already taught the class before and may or may not teach it again, but the training was quite good and engaging. Plus, several of the participants, including myself, had taught the class before and could offer suggestions to those who hadn't taught it before. It was also nice that my department head was there.

On Wednesday I trained for a remedial reading class. The training was the most excruciatingly boring thing I've endured for quite a while, and I was amazed at the utter stupidity of some of the teachers who were participating! UG! It was really hard to sit through. If I didn't need the money, I would definitely have skipped out at lunch! I mean, these teachers had no faith in their students, and yet several of them asked questions that made me wonder if THEY had finished high school!

Thursday brought training for another reading class, but this was much better than Wednesday's training. Plus, the faciliatators had good prizes for the various activities, so that was a bonus.

Despite almost non-stop rain in our little part of the world, I've been able to enjoy several nights out with friends and family this week. On Tuesday, I went out with my friend Will. Wednesday brought my dad and stepmother into town for a family member's cruise ship wedding. Dad, Carol and I went to dinner at International Plaza mall. Then Thursday Joe took me to dinner and we watched Buffy Season 4. So it's been a busy, social week.

Andrew comes home on July 5. I'm trying hard NOT to pay attention to the date and not to count the days. Instead, I'm just trying to stay busy and focus on other things. So far, so good.

Today is my 6th wedding anniversary, but Andrew and I aren't celebrating until he gets back. So for now I sit here and think about how blessed I am to have such a great husband and stong marriage. And I can hardly wait until he gets back!
