A furnished flat

We have furniture! It's not a lot, but some of the most important stuff is here!

Today I got two major steps closer to living in a furnished apartment.

My father-in-law delivered a desk this morning for our den. It was a generous gift from a family friend and is much appreciated. Mr. Hughey (Sr.) and a co-worker were nice enough to deliver it to my den. The only drawback I found with it was that it had a hutch on the top. Normally, that would be great - more storage space. But, because of the size and layout of our den, it was a bit of a problem. First of all, the den has these great built-in bookshelves and I wanted the desk to butt up to them. With the hutch there, the first two shelves were blocked. With it on the perpendicular wall, the hutch covered up my Masters degree. No problem, I can move that, but it also made for a very convenient stepstool for Miss Ophelia to climb up to naughty heights!

So, after it was delivered, I looked it over to see if I could remove the hutch. Like I said in the last entry, I'm surprisingly handy with these things (especially for a total priss). Within an hour, the hutch had been removed and disassembled. I put the pieces aside in a closet in case we want them in the future (or want to give the desk to someone who wants them). The desk looks fine without them. There are a few small screw holes, but no marks, and the holes are covered up by stuff anyway. The desk is the perfect size for the room and I'm very happy not to be sitting on the floor to type this entry! Granted, I'm sitting in a rocking chair, but .. . okay, so I'll get a desk chair one of these days. But the desk is great.

The other bit of furniture fun today was the arrival our LoveSacs. This is the craziest thing I've done in a while, but Andrew and I are silly, fun people. What is a LoveSac? Well, it's basically a nice beanbag chair - but not full of beans, full of better stuff that lasts a lot longer and is more comfy. Let me back up.

When we were in England I decided that when we moved back to the United States I'd really like to have a bean bag chair. I know it's a bit juvenile, but I have always found them really comfy and haven't had one since I was a kid. So I said, when we go back, what the heck? We'll get one - even if we hide it in a closet when company is over.

When we visited my sister in SLC, we went to a mall that actually had a bean bag store - well, a LoveSac store (their motto is actually, "It's not a damn beanbag."). We went in just to look around, and wound up sitting on one of the 5-foot "Ton-O-Love" sacs together. MAN was it comfortable. And they had tons of nice, different covers for them that made them look not quite as cheezy as your basic Wal-Mart kids' beanbag. We got to talking to each other and the sales guys and my sister and brother in law, and the more we talked about it, the more we liked the idea of owning one.

So, by the time we left SLC, we had ordered a Ton-O-Love sac and a Little-Love sac, which we can use as an ottoman or second chair. The big one fits two people easily and I loved cuddling with Andrew in it. To tell the truth, that's what sold me on it. It's kinda cozy and romantic! Andrew really dug the idea, too, so we went for it. I mean, why not? We're grown-ups and if we want to get a big ole bean bag chair for our apartment, why not?! Plus the store gave us a good deal on it (cheaper than buying it online by quite a bit, and even cheaper than if we'd gone to their Florida store because we didn't have to pay sales tax) and shipped it to us cheaply. Today the bags arrived and I got to fluff them and put the covers on. Okay, they're not the most attractive living room furniture. Actually, the big one looks something like a boulder. But they are SUPER comfy! And it beats sitting on the floor.

The kitties have been taking turns on the Little Love Sac all day. Romeo was first and actually made the thing look rather regal. Ophie just about disappears in the dark blue cover. They're all too nervous to conquer the Ton-O-Love so far. LOL.

In addition to those fun things, I spent today applying for a job at USF (where I went to grad school) that I REALLY want. It's just your basic research/office assistant, but it's in the College of Education and the pay is pretty good. I sent my resume and a letter to the woman in charge of hiring for the position, so let's hope it works out. If not, I'm sure something will come along. I got one call back about another job I applied for, but it turned out to be over an hour's drive away and possibly very temporary - for average pay - so the woman at the temp agency encouraged me to wait for something better to come along and I agreed.

Tomorrow cable shall be installed. YAY. I don't miss TV that much per se, but I am looking forward to seeing the new Buffy and I will appreciate the noise when it gets too quiet here.

Tomorrow is also Andrew's brother's birthday, so happy birthday, Mike!
