I am NOT a sports fan. I like the Olympics, especially Summer. I watch the "girly" sports like gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and (during the Winter Olympics) figure skating. I also really love to watch track and field. A lot. But of all the popular American pro sports, I am only really familiar with baseball. I like baseball quite a lot, but don't follow it. I've been to tons of Kansas City Royals games with my dad and love them.
But the most-loved sports, I'm really not into. My dad and sister are, but not me. I really don't care for football, and basketball could go away forever and I'd be pleased.
But, at the risk of sounding like a fairweather fan, I have to say, Go Bucs!
My little, crappy hometown football team, of whom I've never been a particular fan or hater, has FINALLY made it to the Superbowl! I have been watching over the past few years as they went from the butt of every pro sports joke to actually being a respected team. By the way, it should be noted that I chalk the change up to much-improved team colors and logo. Seriously. I have always judged the teams I like by their colors. The Bucs used to be wimpy orange and white with some yellow. Their mascot was a really dumb looking "pirate" named Bucco Bruce with a dagger in his teeth and a very whispy feather in his hat, who winked at you from off of players' helmets. LAME! Then they got these RED and BLACK uniforms and started using the old skull and crossbones logo. GRR! They got a pirate flag and built a pirate ship stadium with a cannon that shoots confetti when they make a touchdown. Cool!
Again, I'm not calling myself a fan, but I did watch the scores on the news and got excited each time the Superbowl seemed within range. And it has been seemingly within range in recent years. All of a sudden, people in Tampa stopped complaining so much about the Bucs and started going to games! Wow!
This year, of course, distance has made me grow fonder. Although I am still NOT a sports fan, and definitely NOT a football fan, I listened to the playoff game against sombodyorother two weeks ago over the internet. I mean, I was very curious to see if they would win. Last night I couldn't get it online, but I watched the NFL homepage graphic and got REALLY excited (and also stayed up too late!) as the Bucs actually won!
So, I am hoping to be able to watch the Superbowl here - even though it starts at 11:30 at night. Actually, I almost always end up having it on and kind of watching it. I don't think you have to like sports or football to be curious about who wins the big game. Tampa can host a heck of a Superbowl, but now our team gets to be IN it! Neat! Wouldn't it be cool if they WON?

Oh they're GONNA win! If good triumphs over evil, they HAVE to beat the evil Raiders. It's also very cool that the psycho Gruden is coaching against the team he just left LAST YEAR in the Super Bowl. It'll make for some very interesting media commentaries this week at the very least. I must say while you are somewhat a bandwagoner to football, I wouldn't say that about the Bucs. That's reserved for all the people who watch football and rooted for the Steelers in the 70s, the Cowboys in the 80s, the 49ers/Broncos/Packers in the 90s and now are jumping on with Tampa Bay. THOSE are the true bandwagoners. And when Tampa Bay wins next week (prediction: 34-28) they won't feel anywhere NEAR the elation of those of us who have suffered alongside the Bucs all these years. The sweetest victory will be ours! Then it's the Chiefs' turn!!

Posted by: DAD at January 21, 2003 01:09 AMAs you well know, a football fan I am NOT. Actually, I am one of those people who usually watches Gone with the Wind on TMC during the Superbowl. It is cool that Tampa beat Philly as their fans seemed very poor sports. A court room right there in the stadium to save time after arrests? Unbelievable. Anyway, I too hope Tampa wins Sunday. (BTW, the Daytona 500 is February 16!)
Posted by: Mom at January 21, 2003 10:29 PMOK... You know I'm not a big sports fan, either-- I mean, Evan had to tell me that the Bucs were going to even be IN the Superbowl... But, Hey! They won!!! Tampa finally has a winning team!!! :)
GO BUCS!!!!!
